“Each chapter begins with a fun, educational story. Following the story there is a section with activities at three different levels…The activities that follow each story create an opportunity for broader learning, and expanding horizons through imagination and problem solving. There is even space for drawing in each section when needed…
The Kamana for Kids books are an excellent tool to start children learning about the natural world and all of the wonders therein. Stress is placed upon the importance of broadening your knowledge and continuing to learn in every new situation you encounter.”
Jessica Lane, Northwest Baby & Child, October 2007
These training guides are designed for young people who desire a deeper connection
with the natural world.
They are based on our popular Kamana Naturalist Training Program for adults, and
provide a foundation for a lifetime of nature learning.
Many of you have asked for a guide to the Kamana for Kids series. We called co-author Bob Repoley and he sent us one! enjoy...
Kamana for Kids: Overview, by co-author Bob Repoley
Book One, Two and Three Series: Kamana for Kids Book One:
Awareness and Book Two: Hazards have the same format. Each book is made up of
a series of nature-based stories with our favorite characters, Running Deer
and Moon Bird, involved in a nature adventure. An activity page is provided
at the end of each story in order to help each child practice a nature awareness
skill. “Awareness” or “Hazards” can be read in any order.
All of our books have an eight and one half inch by eleven inch format with
spiral binding for easy reading.
Book One explores all aspects of nature awareness: Secret Spot, Owl Eyes, Deer Ears, Raccoon Touch, and Dog Nose. Children love to follow the adventures Running Deer and Moon Bird. They provide fun learning through mystery and adventure.
“Awareness” has 5 stories, 100 pages, 42 full color illustrations,
5 black and white illustrations. For ages 6 to 10.
Book Two is a fun and sometimes-mysterious look at many of the common hazards in the natural world. It follows Running Deer and Moon Bird, on an eventful overnight hike where they encounter getting lost, lightning, wild animal encounters, poisonous plants, insects, and much more. Your child will learn to be aware of hazards, not fearful of them.
“Hazards” has 7 stories, 94 pages, 33 full color illustrations, 7 black and white illustrations. For ages 6 to 10.
In “Giving Thanks” Running Deer and Moon Bird encounter a variety of unusual animals and people, and find reason to give thanks for the good things in their lives. These stories provide a gentle reminder to the children, and to all of us, to offer thanksgiving. It can be read independently of our other books.
“Giving Thanks” has 5 Stories, 77 pages, 43 black and white illustrations. For ages 8 to 12

“The Young Naturalist” presents challenging activities and questions that will stimulate their thinking.
