“Using humor and gentle encouragement, the writers have created a safe and friendly environment to teach children, and parents, about the hazards that require heightened awareness when enjoying nature…
The Kamana for Kids books are an excellent tool to start children learning about the natural world and all of the wonders therein. Stress is placed upon the importance of broadening your knowledge and continuing to learn in every new situation you encounter.”
–Jessica Lane, Northwest Baby & Child, October 2007
I am going to reveal a little secret here.
Since I was the Kamana director, Bob and Barbara (the Kamana for Kids authors) sent me their prototype for Book 2 a year ago. So, my son was lucky enough to go through Book Two as well!
My son certainly loved Book One. He still goes to his secret spot! BUT he REALLY loved Book Two. It is an EXCELLENT continuation, written in the same spirit as Kamana for Kids Book 1 and the same procession as the Kamana for Adults.
He loved it so much because it involves hazards. My son loves to hear about the "scary things." It absolutely enthralls him. Poisonous spiders, poison ivy, bears, cougars...WOW! It had him on edge.
The book teaches them about these things as well as hypothermia and basic navigation...such as which way is north.
Artfully written by Bob Repoley and beautifully illustrated by Barbara English (both Kamana graduates), these nature stories and activities will educate as well as inspire the children in your life. It teaches them basic hazards and awareness skills in a gentle and safe manner.
Each story ends with an activity page.
What is the AGE RANGE for this book?
Being that they are stories with illustrations, you can read it to a 3 year old and he or she will love it. For the child who can read, they can go through the stories and do the activities on their own or with your help. I would say ages 2 or 3 to 11 or 12. As a parent, that's my best guestimate.
The book is 92 pages. I know $24.95 may seem a bit pricey, but understand that this is a full color book, and is printed in small batches from a local print house. Your purchase helps us get closer to being able to print larger amounts, which will make it available to more kids in the future.

Kamana for Kids: Overview, by co-author Bob Repoley
Book One, Two and Three Series: Kamana for Kids Book One: Awareness and Book Two: Hazards have the same format. Each book is made up of a series of nature-based stories with our favorite characters, Running Deer and Moon Bird, involved in a nature adventure. An activity page is provided at the end of each story in order to help each child practice a nature awareness skill. “Awareness” or “Hazards” can be read in any order. All of our books have an eight and one half inch by eleven inch format with spiral binding for easy reading.
BOOK ONE: AWARENESS
Book One explores all aspects of nature awareness: Secret Spot, Owl Eyes, Deer Ears, Raccoon Touch, and Dog Nose. Children love to follow the adventures Running Deer and Moon Bird. They provide fun learning through mystery and adventure.

BOOK TWO: HAZARDS
Book Two is a fun and sometimes-mysterious look at many of the common hazards in the natural world. It follows Running Deer and Moon Bird, on an eventful overnight hike where they encounter getting lost, lightning, wild animal encounters, poisonous plants, insects, and much more. THE YOUNG NATURALIST
This book is a training guide designed for young people who desire a deeper connection with the natural world. It is based on the popular Kamana Naturalist Training Program for adults. We provide a foundation for a lifetime of nature learning by guiding each child, at any age level, through new and exciting experiences in the natural world.
“The Young Naturalist” presents challenging activities and questions that will stimulate their thinking. Think of it as a home "experience" nature awareness course for children, rather than a home "study" course for adults. It can be read independently of our other books.
